Journal Entry #56 - Rockford, IL to our new home in Ohio!

Thursday 10/24/2002
Day 56 / Day 6 of 4th leg

start mileage (our truck) 96788 / end 97231
(rental truck) 76672 / 77121

I was a little sleepy-headed this morning, so David had to handle the morning details. Had a bagel and coffee downstairs, and got on the road at 7:45am.

8:30am   fuel stop in Rochelle, IL.  David heard on the radio that Nebraska is getting enough snow to close some roads, so now the I-90 northern route choice seems wise (again) after all.
Onto I-39

9:20am  Onto 80-south [96854 / 41.5 mi]  Weather has been gray & rainy since the get-go

10:15   Pit stop. Rested my head for a minute because I’m fighting off ‘the sleepies’ again. Then, with a Diet Coke i.v. and some horribly obnoxious, frantic jazz as stimuli, it was go again.

11:10   Into Indiana. [96936 / 124 mi]  Called Karin—left message.  Called Leslie—she said we haven’t missed peak leaf season.   11:35 (central time) onto Hwy 30 [96955 / 142mi]

12:30   stop for lunch break (gas station hot dog to go) (switched to front tank at 196 mi)

Tig has been so good, and so accommodating of the weird travel schedule. When the truck stops for a break, he comes out from wherever he is and *goes in the back of the truck to use his litter box, or get a drink of water, and sometimes just to be near the dogs.
He pretends to want to escape sometimes, but he doesn’t try very hard. Mostly he rides behind the seat in the cab on his towel bed, but he comes up to visit me now & again, demanding to be rubbed & petted while he checks out the scenery.
He’s gotten used to trucks passing on the left, but I have to cover his eyes when we go under an overpass because he flips out and runs to hide. Anyway, we’re very proud of Tig, and amazed that a 13 yr old cat can be so flexible in routine and location.

2:15pm  20 mi West of Ft Wayne. Called Dad & Elsie to give our status.  2:45 fuel stop near Ft Wayne

3:11 4:11 (eastern time!) Arrive Ohio! [97100]    4:30  “105 miles to Mansfield” [97118 / 229 mi]

6:45pm  Arrived at our new home-to-be!

I’d like to report that it was more exciting and spectacular
than a scene from a movie, but our friend, Reality, came knocking.

A few miles from the house I had seen the Volvo take a vicious leap on the car trailer from a *weird bump in the road, and I suspected there would be some disarray of plants in the back of the car. Sure enough, after we pulled in the drive, and David got the Key from [sellers] so we could stay in the house tonight, I looked in the Volvo and saw a ‘mosh pit’ of greenery. David was patient and considerate as I stormed and whined (and yes, cried) and insisted that the plants be immediately evacuated.
The view after several plants had been removed.
Survivors!
Anyhoo, first crisis over. As we were preparing to back the car off the trailer, neighbor [L] dropped by to see if we needed a hand. He’s the son of [G] who dropped by on his ATV when we were doing the house inspection, last trip. But dinner was our immediate goal so we declined any assistance.

Had a wonderful steak dinner at the Brown Derby Roadhouse—we’ll go back there again for sure!  *Slept on mattress in sleeping bags. Too tired to do much else.

*goes in the back of the truck: Tig was able to go from the truck cab through the open back window into the capped bed. There was an inflated ring between cab and cap that insulated inside from outside. It got the job done, but sometimes the squeaking and rubbing noises drove us nuts.

*weird bump: I was later informed that some people call it a "railroad track".
I guess I didn't notice because I was Freaking out.

*Slept on mattress: We thought it was pretty amazing that we could sleep on it,
considering how long it had been tortured on top of the truck!
